Retrospect: RSE Networking Event June 24th/25th

Research Software Engineering, a field as diverse and multi-faceted as one can imagine ‘research’ and ‘software’ to be. Thus, it is all the more important that people from varied academic disciplines, institutions, and countries come together. One such event took place on June 24th/25th, bringing together RSE enthusiasts from King’s College London (e-Research Group and King’s Digital Lab) and Humboldt-University Berlin (IC Digitality and Digital Methods Campus Mitte and partners).

We covered a wide range of topics over the course of two days, including how to obtain funding for international cooperation, the impact of AI on the RSE-sphere (especially in training/teaching), RSE roles and career paths, sustainability and computing, as well as governance and project management.
The first day focused on funding opportunities through Circle-U, an interdisciplinary alliance of nine European universities including King’s College and Humboldt-University, leading to very concrete next steps. An open discussion round on RSE in Humanities featuring Malte Dreyer (Director Computing Centre HUB), Torsten Hiltmann (Digital History HUB), Roland Meyer (West Slavic Languages HUB), and Thomas Krause (Software Developer HUB) finished the day on a high note.

The next day, we used the remaining time to work in small groups on the most pressing issues we identified: Green computing and ethics, career development for RSE roles, and developing/running training courses for researchers. Two rounds of discussion, with one person staying at each topic and the others switching, made it possible to pool the different experiences and thoughts into shared notes. Afterwards, Humboldt-University’s International Office offered their knowledge in applying for Circle-U funding, which nicely connected day one and two. The event concluded with a talk by Geoffroy Noël: Static-first approach to web development.
